The City of Calvert City has been named the 2025 City Government of the Year by the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC). An independent panel of judges selected Calvert City from several nominations, recognizing the city for its transformational achievements and outstanding leadership.

KLC has presented the City Government of the Year Award annually since 1999, honoring cities that demonstrate innovation, excellence in governance, and community impact. The award will be formally presented to Calvert City officials at the KLC Conference on September 26 in Owensboro, Kentucky.

“This award is a testament to the dedicated leadership of our employees, especially those at the retirement level whose hard work has laid the foundation for this recognition,” said City Administrator John Ward. “Their vision and combined experience of over 75 years brought Calvert City to this proud moment, and they deserve to be celebrated.”

Mayor Gene Colburn added, “Calvert City exemplifies the best of Kentucky—resilient, resourceful, and rooted in community. With trailblazing initiatives, nationally recognized infrastructure, a growing economic footprint, and a powerful civic spirit, we continue to prove that size is no barrier to excellence.”

With many employees at retirement age, city officials emphasized that the award comes at the perfect time to honor the achievements of staff whose service and dedication have shaped the city’s progress. From police and fire to public works, utilities, clerks, managers, board and council members—every member of our team helps make Calvert City the vibrant, welcoming community we all call home.

The Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) is a nonprofit membership organization representing more than 380 cities across the Commonwealth. Since its founding in 1927, KLC has provided advocacy, training, research, and resources to help cities thrive, promoting effective local governance and community development throughout Kentucky.
