AN Unpolished gem

Before the fall season slips away, come explore this unique outdoor paradise. Pick some flowers, take a breath of crisp autumn air, and discover the simple beauty of Fire Lake Farms.

Fire Lake Farms is more than just a farm; it’s a love letter to the land, family roots, and the simple joys of outdoor living. Nestled on over 100 acres just minutes from the heart of Calvert City, this one-of-a-kind destination invites visitors to reconnect with nature in an unpolished, intentionally rustic setting.

Robin Norris and his two sons purchased the land from his cousin, carrying on a legacy that has been part of his family for as long as he can remember. But the farm’s history runs deeper than just family ties—it’s woven into the fabric of Calvert City itself. In the 1950s, Gerald Moore, a relative and local plant worker, decided to trade factory life for farming after his request for extended leave was denied. He quit his job and began growing “Kentucky Vine Ripe Tomatoes” on the land for more than 50 years, shipping his produce all over the country. That same spirit of independence, hard work, and vision continue to shape Fire Lake Farms today.

When Norris took over, he envisioned a place that would be more than just a farm. “I want this place to have all the feels of a state park with a few more amenities,” he explained. After exploring several ideas, Norris created what he calls “a collage of many things,” blending adventure, relaxation, and community into the farm’s offerings.

Fire Lake Farms is a place where visitors can make their adventure—or simply enjoy the quiet. “This place has something for everyone,” Norris said. “You can ride mountain bikes, kayak, camp, just sit in a swing and read a book, or escape into nature. Whatever the person needs, I hope Fire Lake Farms can fulfill that need.”

For just $15, visitors can pick-your-own bouquet from the farm’s wildflower fields, pick a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, enjoy lunch or dinner by the lake, or sip on a cup of hot chocolate or cold beverage at the bar while taking in the scenery.

For those seeking solitude, Fire Lake Farms offers four secluded campsites away from the activity hubs. Bring your kayak to paddle the peaceful waters or wander the trails to discover hidden corners and even a few natural springs. The farm runs entirely off-grid with a solar-powered system, keeping the experience simple and sustainable.

The name “Fire Lake Farms” is rooted in a magical moment that Norris will never forget. While out exploring one evening, he looked across the lake and noticed the ground beneath him glowing with foxfire, a bioluminescence created by some species of fungi present in decaying wood that only appear under the right conditions. “It was the first and only time I ever saw foxfire here,” Norris said. “When I reflected on that night, I knew this place had a name.”

While Fire Lake Farms already offers a variety of outdoor activities, Norris has exciting plans for the future. Currently under construction is “The Glass House and Chapel,” a structure designed to host weddings and events throughout the year. “This venue will allow us to move things indoors during the winter,” Norris shared. “It’s a space where people can come together for special moments, whether it’s a wedding by the lake or a gathering to escape the cold.” The new addition will open more opportunities for Fire Lake Farms to host seasonal events, intimate ceremonies, and year-round celebrations.

Fire Lake Farms is open Friday from 4 PM to Midnight, Saturday from 10 AM to Midnight, and Sunday from 2 PM to “Dark 30,” though private visits can be arranged by calling 270-210-2236.
