TITLE: POLICE OFFICER (PATROLMAN)
Class Characteristics: Under the general direction of a superior officer, performs police duties in enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances on an assigned shift; performs related work as required.
General Duties and Responsibilities: Patrols the City in a cruiser on regularly assigned shifts enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Responds to all calls during assigned shifts, take proper action, and prepare accurate reports. Issues court citations for traffic violations; appears in court when necessary. Makes arrests. Serves legal documents for the courts. Controls traffic at school crossings, fires, accidents, parades, etc. performs sobriety tests, and administers breathalyzer equipment. Secures the scenes of crimes and accidents, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and prepares accurate reports. Performs investigative duties when necessary. Provides security for businesses and homes as requested. Assists in emergencies; may administer first-aid. Provides security and funeral escorts when necessary. Issues parking violations. May operate radar equipment. Participates in approved law enforcement training courses.
QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent; minimum of one year of law enforcement experience; certification by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council meeting the peace officer qualifications of the Peace Officer Professional Standards Act; successful completion and certification of basic training approved by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (and annual in-service training after that) as mandated by KRS 15.380 to KRS 15.404
Knowledge, Essential Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the geography of the City. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures with the ability to apply knowledge to specific situations. Knowledge of Departmental equipment. Knowledge of first-aid application. Ability to analyze situations and to act quickly and efficiently. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to deal courteously, but firmly with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other police departments/agencies, City officers, coworkers, and the general public. Ability to prepare written reports accurately.
Licensing Requirements: Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver’s license.
Additional Requirements: Must have completed required law enforcement basic training, and must complete required in-service training each year. Must be able to work irregular hours on assigned shifts.
Overtime Status: Non-exempt.
