The City of Calvert City is proud to recognize the efforts of the Calvert City Community Advisory Team (CCCAT), which recently awarded a total of $26,023 in Major and Mini Grants, along with $10,000 in scholarships, to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in Livingston and Marshall Counties.

A major grant of $7,500 was awarded to Jennifer Smith, a teacher in the Livingston County School District, for her “Robotics and Coding Project,” which is designed for 6th—to 8th-grade students. This initiative aims to enhance problem-solving and technological skills among middle school students.

In addition to the major grant, the CCCAT awarded six mini-grants to area educators:

  • Justin Mitchell, South Marshall Middle School (7th Grade) – “Chemical Reactions and Matter,” $1,500

  • Hayley Donohoo, Calvert City Elementary School (3rd Grade) – “How Can Energy Be Transferred and Used to Solve Everyday Problems,” $1,500

  • Abbye Moore, Sharpe Elementary School (K–5) – “Building Masters: Design, Create, and Inspire with KEVA Planks,” $1,500

  • Jennifer Smith, Livingston County School District (K–5) – “Family Science Night STEM Tubs,” $1,818

  • Miriam Gibson, North Marshall Middle School (7th Grade) – “Identification of Chemical Reactions,” $1,017

  • Brad Darnall, South Marshall Elementary School (K–5) – “Bridges Math Intervention Kits with Manipulatives,” $1,188

Each spring, the CCCAT also awards $10,000 in scholarships to support higher education. This year, ten $1,000 scholarships were granted to junior and senior students enrolled at the University of Kentucky College of Engineering Paducah Campus. A check presentation was made during the CCCAT’s March meeting.

“Arkema, along with other members of the CCCAT, is pleased to fund the 2025 spring science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) grants,” said Clint Stone, Environmental Manager with Arkema. “Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are necessary to work in today’s industry. Spring grant funding will assist Marshall and Livingston County school system educators in teaching these vital skills to over 1,250 students. We are proud to play a role in that effort.”

About the CCCAT

Formed in 1992, the Calvert City Community Advisory Team is a collaboration between community members and representatives from 10 Calvert City chemical and industrial plants. The CCCAT meets eight times a year to share information and address community issues, acting as a forum for transparency and communication.

The grants and scholarships are funded by CCCAT member companies: Arkema, Inc.; Ashland; Carbide Industries, LLC; Cymetech Corporation; Estron Chemical, Inc.; Evonik Corporation; Lubrizol Advanced Materials; Sekisui SC; Wacker Chemical Corporation; and Westlake Vinyls, Inc.

Mini-grant applications are reviewed each spring and fall, while major grants and scholarships are awarded in the spring. The next round of mini-grant applications will be sent to schools in Marshall and Livingston Counties in fall 2025.
