It has been a big week of celebration for Calvert City, and it is only Tuesday!

On Monday, Feb. 23, city officials, council members, and local leaders gathered for an exclusive VIP event to mark the soft opening of the historical horse racing facility at Marshall Yards. The invitation-only event offered community leaders a first look at the new gaming destination located just off Interstate 24.

Mayor Gene Colburn had the honor of placing the first bet, officially pulling the first historical horse racing machine lever and ushering in a new era of entertainment and economic development for the region.

The facility is operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated, a company with deep roots in Kentucky history. Known worldwide for hosting the Kentucky Derby since 1875, Churchill Downs has long been a cornerstone of the commonwealth’s equine heritage. The addition of a historical gaming venue in Calvert City expands that legacy while bringing new opportunities and investment to western Kentucky.

Marshall Yards represents a significant investment in Calvert City, bringing more than 100 new jobs to the community. The development has transformed what was once a dark and underutilized area along Interstate 24 into a vibrant and welcoming gateway for residents and visitors.

City leaders believe this project is only the beginning of future growth along the interstate corridor.

“This project represents more than a new entertainment venue. It represents momentum,” Mayor Colburn said. “We are seeing real community growth, new jobs for our citizens, and thoughtful development that enhances the entrance to our city. Marshall Yards is proof that Calvert City is moving forward, and we believe this is just the beginning of even more opportunities along the Interstate 24 corridor.”

The official grand opening of Marshall Yards is set for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend and help celebrate this exciting new chapter for Calvert City.

While local leaders were celebrating economic growth at home, Calvert City was also being recognized on a multi-state stage. Representatives from the city attended the Tennessee RiverLine Summit in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Calvert City received an award for Outdoor Recreation in recognition of its continued investment in river access and outdoor amenities.

Brad Collett, professor and executive director of the Tennessee RiverLine, an initiative of UT Extension, shared:

“On behalf of the Tennessee RiverLine team, UT Extension, and our principal partners, UT Knoxville and TVA, as well as our partners across the region, I have the distinct honor and privilege to recognize communities like Calvert City for their leadership and commitment to outdoor recreation.

The summit also celebrated individual leadership across the seven states of the Tennessee River. Kim Hagan of Kentucky Dam Village State Park received the 2025 “Extra Mile” Award for her outstanding leadership and dedication. Throughout the year, Hagan organized and supported numerous events and activities both on and off the water, truly going the extra mile to enhance outdoor recreation experiences in not only Calvert City but also our region.

From economic development and job creation to outdoor recreation excellence and regional recognition, it has been a week filled with milestones for Calvert City.

Community members are encouraged to attend the Marshall Yards grand opening on Feb. 25 at 10:30 a.m. and be part of this exciting moment in the city’s continued growth.
