Mayor Gene Colburn announced April 13 at the April Calvert City Council Meeting that he will not seek re-election at the conclusion of his current term.
Colburn has served the citizens of Calvert City in local government since 2004, first as a member of the Marshall County-Calvert City Riverport Authority and later as a member of the City Council from 2009 to 2021. During his time on the council, he was appointed mayor following the passing of Mayor Lynn Jones and was later elected to continue serving in that role.
“It has truly been an honor to serve the people of Calvert City,” Colburn said. “Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated council members, city employees, and community leaders who care deeply about our city and its future.”
Colburn said his decision not to run again comes after careful consideration.
“After giving this significant thought, I have decided that, due to professional and personal considerations, I will not seek re-election,” he said. “Making this announcement now allows anyone interested in serving the community as mayor the opportunity to prepare and register for the upcoming November election.”
Reflecting on his time in office, Colburn emphasized the importance of collaboration, strong leadership, and the culture that has been built within the city.
“What I am most proud of is that Calvert City is a well-run community, consistently led by dedicated professionals,” he said. “Our elected officials have worked together to make this not only a great place to live, but also a great place to work. While we are a small city, we consistently perform at a level well above our size. That continuity in leadership has allowed us to improve the quality of life, strengthen economic development, and position Calvert City for continued success.”
Colburn also pointed to the city’s broader impact beyond its borders.
“We have been trailblazers in implementing important policies that have supported development not only within Calvert City, but have also helped set an example across our county and the region,” he said. “I believe that leadership and a forward-thinking approach will continue to benefit our community well into the future.”

We’ve strengthened our focus on economic development, improved quality of life, and I’m proud that Calvert City was recognized as the 2025 Government of the Year by the Kentucky League of Cities.”
